Fired workers stage protest at South Gobi Sands

Representatives of 49 workers recently fired from South Gobi Sands LLC met with company officials Wednesday morning.

The workers say they were fired without cause. On Tuesday they staged a protest and blocked a car carrying the head of the company, Curt Cherch, demanding an explanation, but he refused to get out of the car. The protest was led by S.Ganbold, the head of the Trade Union of Energy, Geology and Mining.

South Gobi Sands human resources manager N.Erdenebayar said the workers were fired lawfully.

At their meeting on Wednesday morning, the two sides attempted to reach an agreement. They agreed to form a committee with three members from each side to investigate the matter. The two sides were scheduled to meet again on Wednesday afternoon.
