DP MPs discuss party’s decision to leave coalition government

DP Chairman N.Altankhuyag announced on Thursday that the DP is pulling out of the coalition government, though the party’s National Consultative Committee has not yet met to formally approve the move. Two DP MPs discussed the issue with our correspondent.

MP E.Bat-Uul said he knew about the move and approved of it. He said the DP’s decision is historic and politically important, and it will keep Mongolia’s parliament democratic.

E.Bat-Uul noted that the DP made concessions in the debates over the distribution of mining revenue and the new election law. He said the DP decided to form a coalition government with the MPP after the 2008 election because of the political situation at that time. But he said he opposed forming a coalition government, and by leaving it he says the party is adhering to its principles.

E.Bat-Uul said he believes the DP’s National Consultative Committee will support the move because it will put the party in a better position for this year’s election.

MP Kh.Temuujin noted that the decision to leave the coalition government is not official yet. After the National Consultative Committee approves it, he said, it will be official.

He noted that the DP’s One Democracy movement supports the decision. Kh.Temuujin thinks DP ministers have achieved progress and legislative reforms in their sectors, including mining and infrastructure. He said the public has demanded human rights, justice, judicial reform, and responsible governance since 2008. He believes the DP has performed its duty in the coalition government.
