Five new MPs to swear oath

The five newly elected parliamentarians were due to take their oaths at 10.00 am on Wednesday. The State Great Khural, or parliament, will now included new MPs G.Batkhuu and D.Zorigt who were elected in Uvurkhangai aimag, Ts.Oyunbaatar who was approved by the party list for MPRP, D.Sarangerel who was also approved by party list for MPP and D.Arvin who was elected in Bayanzurkh District.

One new MP, Ts.Oyunbaatar, is not a newcomer to politics. He was MP in parliament in 2000-2004. Ts.Oyunbaatar was elected by the party list for the MPRP-MNDP Justice coalition in the election.

His swearing-in was postponed due to former president, the head of MPRP, N.Enkhbayar`s controversial trial for four months. But it was still unclear if he would take oath as an MP until MPRP reached a decision.

Candidates who competed in the parliamentarian election for the 10th electoral poll in Uvurkhangai aimag are in a legal dispute after the election results. Candidates from MPP accuse two DP candidates of violating election laws by distributing gifts to voters in order to increase their votes.

In return, DP candidates have accused MPP candidates of violating election law by having children involved in their campaign.

The Election General Committee submitted a statement that accepted DP candidates G.Batkhuu and M.Zorigt as MPs according to the Court’s decision.

The Election General Committee`s decision on these controversial candidates face opposition by the MPP through a sit-in strike. Parliament therefore postponed the two new candidates from taking the oath.

The newly elected M.Zorigt believes in his victory in last June’s parliament election. He also won in Uvurkhangai aimag in the 2008 parliamentary election and was a representative in parliament. Now M.Zorigt is to take his oath on Thursday while MPP candidate S.Chinzorig, who lost in the election, plans a hunger strike to protest the Election General Committee`s decision.

For MP D.Arvin, this is the fourth time she has been elected as MP. She was previously elected in her home region, Khentii aimag, for parliament. This time she won in Bayanzurkh District. She competed with former Bayanzurkh district governor in the election and won.

The fifth MP to take oath today is journalist D.Sarangerel. She has spent most of her years in media. As former director of TV-5 was responsible for acting as the Secretary General of MPP.

She replaced MP U.Khurelsukh who resigned as an MP on November 2nd. Now she and MP D.Arvin increase the number of female MPs to 11 in parliament.
