OYU TOLGOI SUPPORTS MDGS

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia /MONTSAME/ The Oyu Tolgoi LLC is committed to contributing to the socio-economic development of Mongolia, the company's website reported on last Saturday.


One example is a support for NGOs who are working to contribute solving development challenges in Mongolia. The company has stressed it aims to support projects which align with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in Mongolia.

The Oyu Tolgoi LLC has received 64 applications for the funding cycles running during last quarter of 2011. From these entries, Oyu Tolgoi's Internal Review Committee selected the following five projects for funding. Selections were made in line with our criteria and available funding. These projects will contribute to the MDGs such as ensuring environmental sustainability and strengthen human rights.

One of the funding recipients is “Setgelzuin Uvidas” center which translates as 'Wonders of Psychology” provides psychological training, counselling and therapy to persons with disabilities. The NGO helps people with disabilities, many of whom live in isolated conditions, to participate in social and community life. This, in turn, supports their physical and emotional wellbeing. The NGO will train 560 persons with disabilities from UB. Also “Bayanzurkh Women Development Center”, another recipient improving environmental situation in ger districts and with funding of Oyu Tolgoi, the center will conduct training on tree plantation for 60 households in remotely isolated ger areas of Bayanzurkh district of Ulaanbaatar. Each of the 60 households will cultivate and grow trees in their khashaa (fence).

“National Association of Mongolian citizens on Wheel Chair” will work with and support 10 women with disability. The project will help the women to solve difficult challenges and problems that face them and develop as useful member of society.

“Children and youth club that protects animals” was selected to implement a training project in environmental and wild life protection. The club will conduct training for 210 children of school age and contribute to formation of patriotic citizens with consciousness for environmental protection.

“Alyandra Women's Development” 'NGO proposed to cultivate greenery and build pedestrian roads in the remotely isolated ger area of Songinokhairkhan district of Ulaanbaatar in order to contribute to reduction of air pollution, smogs of Ger districts of Ulaanbaatar. About 1108 residents of 268 households of Bayantsagaan ger area of Songinokhairkah district will be involved in the project to be financed by Oyu Tolgoi.

Oyu Tolgoi will provide funding totaling 112 million 715 thousand togrogs to these five NGOs. These projects will be implemented by 2nd and 3rd quarters of this year.

A director of the “Bayanzurkh Women Development Center” B.Khishigt said: "We are very happy that Oyu Tolgoi decided to fund our project proposal. Our proposal is about improvement of living environment of the Ger area residents in cooperation with the ger area residents. We want to say big thank you to Oyu Tolgoi for funding any activity whether it is small or big that contributes to development of Mongolia”.
