EGC gives update on election preparations

The Election General Committee (EGC) updated journalists on its preparations for the parliamentary election on Monday.

EGC Chairman N.Luvsanjav told our reporter that election units in soums and districts will be established by February 15. Votes will be counted electronically. Mongolians living abroad can vote 15 days before the election. Their votes will not be counted until all other ballots are cast. The EGC and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade will issue rules for Mongolians voting abroad.

He said the committee has delivered its opinions on several controversial provisions of the election law to the State Supreme Court.

An American company is under contract to supply voting machines for the election. The EGC will buy 2,500 machines by May 15, and about 1,800 citizens will be trained to run the election. They should have knowledge of the techniques and technology involved in the voting, N.Luvsanjav said.
