Montsame names domestic highlight events

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, /MONTSAME/ The MONTSAME national news agency of Mongolia is highlighting the most important events that have occurred in Mongolia in 2010.

1.Mongolia counted population and apartment.

The nationwide population and apartment census was organized on November 11-17. As preliminary results, two million, 650 thousand and 673 people have been registered. The most importantly, Mongolians living in some 30 countries have been involved for the first time in the census.

2.Mongolia has the public day of planting trees. Moreover, the cabinet has been held in the Gobi desert for the first time.

The public day of planting trees has been created pursuant to a decree of the Mongolia's President Ts.Elbegdorj. The movements held in both in spring and autumn have attracted 499 entities, and some 70 thousand citizens. They have planted 1194.4 thousand trees. It is considered that the campaign was the most important event in times of intensive action of the desertification. One of the cabinet meetings which is held in the Gobi desert has issued a message combating against climate change. It has been appreciated by the United Nations.

3.The zud disaster has killed 10 million heads of livestock.

Due to the extreme cold weather in minus 40 took place in 90 per cent of whole territory, about 10 million heads of livestock causing loss of MNT ten billion. Those families who lost their livestock have received aid of MNT 75 billion. Livestock carcasses have been eliminated.

4.The great debt has been reduced to zero. As results of an official visit of the Mongolia's Premier S.Batbold to the Russian Federation (RF), the Russian side has let Mongolia to pay 97.8 per cent of the remaining of the debt from Russia (USD 172 million). Thus, Mongolia must pay USD 3.8 million to Russia. In addition to it, the countries have established the "Dornod Uranium" joint company. The Mongolian side will own 51 per cent of the company.

5.The 20th anniversary of the Mongolia's democratic revolution has been celebrated nationwide for a whole year, at an initiative of the Democratic Party.

The eldest political party of Mongolia the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party has held its 26th session on occasion of its 90th anniversary. The party has refreshed its original name changing as the Mongolian People's Party (MPP), and then clarified its concept. Some members of the party have rejected the membership of the MPP because they wanted to keep the name of party. They have said that they will continue political activities under the name of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party (MPRP). In addition to it, the 20th anniversary of establishment of the permanent parliament of Mongolia has been marked. On occasion of this anniversary, the State Great Khural has held a session of honor, and concluded its mistakes and achievements.

6.Sportspeople raised reputation of Mongolia.

&nbs the World Championships in individual event. A ten-year old D.Nomin-Erdene has grabbed gold medals in both Asian and World youth championships for chess; and A.Enkhtuul-a gold medal in the World School Championships. D.Erdenebileg gained Asian champion title for the fourth time for chess. Student boxers have grabbed three gold, three silver and two bronze medals in the World University Boxing Championships took place in Ulaanbaatar city. They led the competitions.

7.The Mongolian Naadam festival, khoomii (throat singing) and eagle hunting were listed in the UNESCO Heritage.

The UNESCO's Convention on protection of cultural heritages has held its 5th meeting in Kenya, and then decided to register the Mongolian Naadam festival, the Mongolian national art of khoomii and the hunting of eagles.

8.The Third campaign for reclaiming virgin lands has been realized fruitfully. The Premier has said Mongolia is able to provide its people with potatoes with 100 per cent, and vegetables--with 53.7 per cent, from home territories. The Third campaign has been initiated by a former Prime Minister S.Bayar with a purpose to revive the land farming sector that was in fall for a decade. Thanks to the campaign, various renovations have been made in legal, economic and technical-technological spheres, and, moreover, a real opportunity has been created to provide the people with safe foods. In frames of the Third campaign, Mongolia has harvested 366.3 thousand tons of grain (of them 344.5 thousand tons are wheat), 169 thousand tons potatoes, 90.3 thousand tons vegetables, five thousand tons barley, 3.1 thousand tons oat, 538 tons rye, 12.9 thousand tons oil vegetables, 205 tons buckwheat, and 38.9 thousand tons fodder vegetables. Mongolia is going to implement a national program called "Guarantee of food safety", the next of the Third campaign for reclaiming virgin lands, aiming to provide people with safe and high quality foods through supporting a participation of state, private sector and the public, improving people's health and labor productivity, reducing poverty and unemployment, promoting an economic sustainable growth.

9.The government has annulled 101 licenses in frames of the year of innovation of business environment, and made a decision to let specialized NGOs execute ten licenses under contracts.

10. On November 2-4, the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) discussed and approved a national report of Mongolia on human rights conditions.

The UNHRC has underlined that the national report reflected necessary information and urgent problems faced to activities for protection of human rights. Moreover, the UNHRC has stated that Mongolia could closely cooperate with civil society organizations and NGOs in working out the report. In addition, Mongolia has suspended the capital punishment.
