Power Pinoys ready for Asian tilt

A short training stint in Korea gave the Philippines’ PLDT HOME TVolution team an experience in international play as the Power Pinoys march to the Asian Men’s Volleyball Club Championship for the very first time starting tomorrow at the Mall of Asia Arena.

National Coach Francis Vicente said his team is ready when it faces Mongolia at 2 pm, following the 12 noon opening ceremonies prepared by the Organizing Committee headed by former Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman Philip Ella Juico in partnership with Sportscore and the newly revitalized Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF).

The tournament runs until April 16.

This is the first time in more than a decade that a Philippine team is taking part in an Asian level tournament. The Power Pinoys are also the very first Philippine team to compete in the AMCC presented this year by PLDT Home Fibr.

Vicente led the team whose core is composed by JP Torres, Ron Jay Galang, Jeffrey Malabanan, Alnakran Abdilla, and actor-sportsman Richard Gomez. Australian players Cedric Legrand and William Robert Lewis will reinforce the Philippine team.

“We played against strong club teams which accommodated our request in Korea and the coaching staff is pleased by the performance of the team. We have formed a cohesive squad which values team play very highly,” Vicente said.

Vicente, however, cautioned his players against complacency against the very strong field led by many-time champion Iran, and regional powerhouse squads China and Korea.

“Our target is to advance to the next round and then we’ll see how far we could gain. The country’s volleyball program has only been revived but our faith in this team could not be shaken. Our men will make us proud despite the challenges they’ll be facing from the strong field,” Juico said.
