OAPs driving round the world reach Mongolia
A GROUP of Hampshire pensioners driving around the world have reached Mongolia.
Les Carvall and his fellow adventurers are 46 days into their attempt to complete a 28,000-mile circuit of the northern hemisphere.
They have formed a charity called Heaven Can Wait, I’m Busy, which aims to raise thousands of pounds for good causes.
Describing their arrival in Mongolia Les, 72, of Everton, near Lymington, explained how they are communicating with the Russian-speaking people.
“I have a number of these slips of paper ready to pull out whenever we need food, accommodation and directions,” he said.
“I sweet-talked the girl at the hotel we stayed at to translate them into Russian.
So when we go to a garage to get fuel I flash my bit of paper that says ‘can you help me please, I do not speak Russian’, give them that ‘take pity on an old man look’ and it works.
However, the retired businessman said he was worried about the state of the roads in Mongolia. He said: “We have allowed five days to travel through and come out the other end. If the roads are as bad as we’ve been told, it may take longer and beat up our two Suzuki Jimnys a bit, which concerns me.
“The only way to find out is to get on and do it, so fingers crossed.”
