London to Mongolia: Yipirinya Charity Surf Challenge

London to Mongolia: first stop Dixon Park

Ulaanbaatar Boardriders will stage the inaugural Yipirinya Charity Surf Challenge at Dixon Park on Saturday 17th March.

This is not the usual surfing event with the aim of crowning a champ.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 10 March, 2012 : - - Newcastle, NSW, Australia; - The Ulaanbaatar boardriders are looking to drive an “unsuitable vehicle” from London to Mongolia in the 2012 Mongol Rally – an annual charity motor rally that involves hundreds of teams attempting to drive ridiculously unsuitable vehicles across Europe and Asia from the UK to Mongolia.

Teams competing in the Mongol Rally must raise money for a charity of their choice and Ulaanbaatar Boardriders have chosen to support Indigenous education through Yipirinya School in Alice Springs.

Yipirinya aims to keep indigenous languages and culture strong through its commitment to “both-ways” education.

Yipirinya teaches literacy and numeracy and western skills following the Northern Territory Curriculum framework, but it also teaches Indigenous languages and culture.

The Yipirinya Charity Surf Challenge is a competition for teams, that takes the focus away from the scoring usually found in modern surfing competitions. Instead it utilises a unique scoring format that focuses on surfers having fun with their mates in the surf.

The idea for this event was inspired by the first and foremost reason people surf - for the fun of it.

Teams may consist of four persons. Entry fee will get each competitor breakfast, lunch, and a competitor’s pack. Each team will compete at least two heats each before final rounds.

Entry fee is $300 per team and entry fees are tax deductible.
