Japanese 'envoy' meets DPRK official

ULAN BATOR--A senior North Korean official in charge of Japanese affairs on Saturday met in mongolia with a Japanese professor, who apparently talked with the official on behalf of Hiroshi Nakai, former state minister in charge of the abduction of Japanese nationals by North Korea.

North Korean Song Il Ho, the ambassador tasked with the two countries' normalization talks, told reporters after meeting with Takushoku University Prof. Sadaki Manabe: "These are not formal talks. We just met personally and talked about issues such as the deteriorated relationship between North Korea and Japan."

Nakai, a Democratic Party of Japan member who is now chairman of the House of Representatives Budget Committee, was initially arranging a meeting with Song. However, as Nakai was visiting Taiwan on Saturday, Manabe apparently acted as his proxy.

A key member of the Investigation Commission on Missing Japanese Probably Related to North Korea, Manabe has been working to tackle the abduction issue.
