Deputy speaker talks food safety with international expert

Deputy Speaker G.Batkhuu received the food safety advisor of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Donald McCray, on Wednesday.

The IFC has worked with the State Specialized Inspecting Agency to monitor food safety in Mongolia. McCray said Mongolia’s food safety law needs to be amended, and the IFC is willing to help Parliament draft a new version of the law. He submitted a proposed law on food safety to Batkhuu. McCray said that food safety legislation should regulate producers and monitor production.

Batkhuu said food safety is an issue on which the very future of Mongolia depends. Therefore, he said, the state must work to ensure food safety, but he also said Mongolia faces challenges, especially since its livestock are dispersed over a very large area.

He noted that Parliament has passed a livestock program that established veterinary facilities in every soum. Also Parliament is discussing a draft law on agricultural trade. Another factor in food safety is to educate citizens. He added that penalties for those responsibly for bad food should be strengthened, and an amendment should regulate the transportation of food.
