President Officiates planting day

Last Saturday was ‘National Day to Plant Tree’ in Mongolia. The President of Mongolia took part in the plantation project. He arrived back in Ulaanbaatar on October 12 from his official visit to Western Europe. When he arrived at the National Park at around 12 o’clock, Ulaanbaatar City Mayor E.Bat-Uul, the leading member of the Ulaanbaatar City Representative’s Office, the Director of the National Park, B.Saranchimeg and other delegation all welcomed him. The President was introduced to the operations of the park. Citizens also gathered at the park to plant trees. The park will occupy a total of 1,280 hectares land in the future.

Ulaanbaatar City Mayor, E.Bat-Uul opened the Tree Planting Day at the National Park claiming, “The National Park has been established to provide a pleasant and healthy living environment for the citizens of Ulaanbaatar City. The park will produce a fresh air and reduce the air pollution in winter and dust in warm seasons. Our citizens will be able to walk along the park and cycle on the cycling trails at the park.”

The Director of the National Park, B.Saranchimeg claimed during the opening, “When we established this park, we had specifically chosen 22 types of trees and bushes to plant here after conducting thorough research. Now 93% of the trees we planted in the first stage have successfully grown.”

She further noted that experts in the environmental sector are aiming to increase the greenery percentage of Ulaanbaatar as it covers only 2-3% of total green area of Mongolia.

The President of Mongolia, Ts Elbegdorj stated, “The United Nations Environment Program has awarded Mongolia as one of the ‘Champions of the Year 2012 Award,’ as Mongolia conducted plantation works to increase the green area to a remarkable level this year. Today, one third of the total population of Mongolia is living in Ulaanbaatar. Thus, tree planting must be initiated by Ulaanbaatar residents. Though the fall plantation work started only three years ago, the number of trees we have planted so far reaches 4.7 million.

I’m so pleased. We will plant 30 million trees soon enough. People of Mongolia – let’s all make our contribution and plant trees together.”
