Discussion on Evacuating Malls out of the City

A discussion on whether or not to move Narantuul,Kharkhorin, Da Khuree, and Uguumur marts has started. At the City`s Managing Board meeting last week the issue was raised to move the big markets out of the City and to have the City’s mayor place a ban on issuing new licenses for shopping malls and markets in areas A and B of the city center.

There are now 11 shopping mall and markets run in Ulaanbaatar city and10 of them are run in open areas. The Ulaanbaatar city general manager Ch.Bat said “Despite the fact that markets provide merchandize services to the public and creates jobs in some parts of society, those markets in city center cause heavy traffic jams, block traffic, and it causes chaos and damage to the city’s landscaping and green structure.”

City mayor E.Bat-Uul said “markets renter’s rights are violated. The market is a public service entity which rents state-owned land. We will work to set a new standard on market construction and activity and have those standards followed. If they are not followed, we will cancel their licenses.”
