NAM member states underline global peace: Mongolia

Mongolia’s foreign minister says all countries participating in the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Tehran champion the cause of global peace and stability.

All countries present in the 16th Non-Aligned Movement Summit underline the establishment of global peace, the establishment of which is one of the main objectives of the summit, Gombojav Zandanshatar said upon his arrival in Tehran on Tuesday.

He underlined the importance of interaction and dialogue between the NAM member states to accomplish the stated objectives of the summit.

Meanwhile, foreign ministers of Mauritius, Cuba and Qatar arrived in Tehran on Tuesday to partake in the summit.

Mauritius’ Foreign Minister Arvin Boolell said progress, justice, peace and freedom are the main messages of the Tehran summit.

He referred to the NAM summit as an opportunity to review the economic challenges facing the world and called for the cooperation of all participating countries in fighting poverty.

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez said peace, relations between countries and the independence of nations will be discussed in the summit.

Qatar's Foreign Minister Khalid Mohamed al-Attiyah, who is the special envoy of Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to the Tehran summit, also said his country is determined to present effective initiatives and plans during the summit.

Al-Attiyah said that the Qatari emir will take part in the NAM summit.

More than 100 countries are partaking in the NAM meeting which kicked off at the expert level in Tehran on Sunday.

At the opening ceremony of the NAM expert-level meeting, Iran assumed the rotating presidency of the movement for three years. Egypt's Ambassador to the United Nations Mootaz Khalil formally handed over the presidency to Iran.

The two-day foreign ministerial meeting of the NAM summit began on Tuesday.
