Bechtel Corp. wins Mongolia industrial complex deal

Engineering giant Bechtel Corp. will create a master plan for a heavy industrial complex in Mongolia that includes an oil refinery and coal gasification power plant.

The Sainshand Industrial Complex will also have mineral processing facilities. Bechtel will oversee debt financing options for each component of the site and will handle economic analyses.

Mongolia, landlocked between Russia and China, sees the development of its mineral resources via this complex as an important part of its economic strategy. Neighboring China, with its red hot economy, is hungry for raw materials and power.

Sainshand is about 200 miles southeast of Mongolia’s capital, Ulan Bator.

Bechtel did not give a price on this contract.

Steve Katzman is president of Bechtel Asia.

Riley Bechtel is CEO of San Francisco-based Bechtel.

The company has vast engineering and project management experience from projects around the earth. It is now working, for example, on Saudi Arabia’s expansion of the Jubail Industrial City, the biggest civil engineering project in the world.

Bechtel is also doing management work at Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone in the United Arab Emirates, and it is helping the government of Gabon in Africa with a master plan for that country.
