First Moscow to Beijing Tourist Train Begins 14-Day Journey

Aug. 16 – The first international tourist train from Moscow to Beijing began its 14-day trip on Monday at Moscow’s Kazansky railway terminal, a Russian news agency reported. Its passengers will spend two weeks on the road and be able to visit major Russian cities along the Trans-Siberian route and the Mongolian capital city of Ulaanbaatar with guided excursions.

The trip was organized by Russian Railways (RZD) in cooperation with the state owned travel agency Intourist, reports said.

“A rich program of excursions will be offered in each of these cities,” a spokesman for Russian Railways told reporters.

Visits to Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Novosibirsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Ulan-Ude, Ulaanbaatar (Mongolia) and Erlian (China) are scheduled in the tour program. In addition, the excursion includes overnight stays in Mongolian yurts (nomadic tents), as well as a trip to Baikal railway along the shore of Lake Baikal.

There are some 400 passengers from 20 countries taking the special trip, Chinese state media said. Interpreter services in seven languages will be available for foreigners and national cuisines will be served.

The train is well-equipped for its journey, reports say. Along with sleeping cars, the train has two restaurants, a cafeteria, and a compartment with bathing cubicles.

The train is due to arrive in Beijing on August 28-29, where tourists will spend two days and then return to Moscow.
