When life gives you lemons: Glenview nail salon chooses name after unique manicure

GLENVIEW — There are two reasons why the owners of Lemon Nails chose to name their new Glenview nail salon after a citrus fruit; one because of the salon’s ambiance, and two because they use actual lemons in the manicures.

“Lemons are very beneficial to the skin. They cleanse, heal and moisturize,” said Aktolkyn Bekmaganbetova, who is one of the four owners of Lemon Nails, which opened three months ago in Glenbrook Market Place Plaza, located on the corner of Willow and Pfingsten Roads. “Additionally, the salon is bright and sunny and happy, with lots of yellow.”

You can say that again! Lemon Nails, with its pastel yellow, green and orange walls, light hardwood floors, white furniture, comfy couches and its focal point, an exposed pipe ceiling with hanging crystals, is being described by customers as a mini-spa.

“It’s beautiful in there, just a lovely experience, ” said Jenny Larson of Glenview. “Lots of people can paint your nails but to have it done in that kind of environment makes it like a spa getaway.”

“I love that it’s clean, new and fresh looking,” said Carrie Melam of Northbrook.

Lemon Nails is run by Bekmaganbetova, who is originally from Kazakhstan, along with Ellen Tsedenbal, who came to the U.S. several years ago from Mongolia. The two, both licensed cosmetologists each worked at various nail salons in the city and on the North Shore prior to opening the salon.

“We really felt like it was time for us to do something for ourselves,” said Tsedenbal, whose husband, Erik is the general contractor who designed and built the salon. “We wanted a relaxing, yet still elegant studio, and we felt like we had a lot to offer our clients when it comes to technique and attentiveness.”

Services the salon offers include manicures, pedicures, waxing, eyelash tinting and eyebrow tinting.

“So far we are finding that people like the peacefulness here,” Bekmaganbetova said. “They come here and they want to talk, and I’m not a therapist but I enjoy listening to them.”

In addition to its main studio, Lemon Nails offers a private room with two pedicure stations available for couples or friends.

Bekmaganbetova also explained that sanitation is a priority at the salon, and that all tools are sterilized and disinfected before use on every client.

“It really does seem very sanitary,” said Melam. “That’s something that’s very important to me.”

“The technicians are very experienced, the lemon products are top-notch, and it’s very clean and beautiful,” Larson said. “I’m a huge fan.”
