Thermal Power Plant V to become operational by 2015

A joint consortium of “International Power GDF by Suez, Posco Energy, Sojitz Corporation and Newcom LLC” was selected as the preferred bidder for the Thermal Power Plant V project in Ulaanbaatar. The operational thermal power plant that will be built using modern CFB technology can produce a total of 450 medawatt electricity and 587 GCal/h heat during peak days in winter. In the first phase of the thermal power plant a 150 MW capacity block will be completed by October 2015 and the second phase is expected to be completed by 2016. The third will be operational in June 2016.

Experts say that the financial package for Thermal Power Plant V will equal a total of 1.3 billion US dollars which will be funded by June 2013.

First, 36 bidders delivered their bid to participate in the tender for Thermal Power Plant V in advance in 2009. Only “Mitsui Cо. Ltd”, “Samsung Samsung C&T, Cospo, Ochir center”, “International Power GDF by Suez , Posco Energy, Sojitz Corporation, Newcom LLC,” and ““Daelim-Lanco” were selected for the final stage. A feasibility study on Thermal Power Plant V was done by &J Inc and Mon-Energy Consult LLC for 1.5 US dollars with support from the Asian Development bank in 2010-2011. A new power plant has not been built in Mongolia since 1987. The current power plant capacity is not enough to provide Ulaanbaatar city`s heat and power needs.
