Berlinale World Cinema Fund Selects Filmmakers From Vietnam, Argentina, Mongolia and Turkey
LONDON – The Berlinale World Cinema Fund jury has unveiled a quartet of projects to benefit from €140,000 ($180,000) in funding spread across the four.
Vietnamese filmmaker Diep Nguyen Hoang's Flapping in the Middle of Nowhere scores €50,000 ($64,000) while Argentina's Benjamin Naishtat's Historia del Miedo, Mongolia's Byamba Sakhya's Remote Control and South Facing Wall, directed by Turkey's Elvent Kutlug Ataman, pick up €30,000 ($38,000) apiece.

The annual funding awards are decided on by a jury, which this year included film scholar and curator Viola Shafik (Germany/Egypt), documentary film producer Marta Andreu (Spain), distributor and producer Jan De Clercq (Belgium) and the fund's project managers Sonja Heinen and Vincenzo Bugno.
The WCF jury made their selection out of 95 submissions from a total of 37 countries.
Since its setup in October 2004, the Berlinale's WCF has granted production or distribution backing to a total of 106 projects, selected from 1,879 submissions from Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Central and Southeast Asia and the Caucasus.
One accomplishment of the fund is that all of the WCF films completed to date have screened at cinemas and/or in the programs of international film festivals around the world.
Prior funding title successes include Fernando Guzzoni's Carne de Perro (Chile), which picked up the new directors award at the San Sebastian Film Festival, and Tres by Pablo Stoll (Uruguay), which premiered during the Festival de Cannes before screening at Munich, Toronto and Amsterdam, among other festivals.
I'm Going to Change my Name by Maria Saakyan from Armenia screened at the BFI London International Film Festival.
And two WCF films that screened in the Berlinale program were selected by their origin countries for the 2013 Academy Awards in the race to secure a nomination slot for best foreign-language film.They are Death for Sale by Faouzi Bensaidi (Panorama 2012) as Morocco's nominee, and Rosario García-Monteros's Las malas intenciones (Generation 2011), which was submitted by Peru.
The WCF is partnership between the German Federal Cultural Foundation and the Berlin International Film Festival, funded by the Federal Government commissioner for culture and the media, in cooperation with the Goethe Institut, with the support of the Federal foreign office.
