Queen ready for Miss World

TWENTY-FOUR-year-old Koini Vakaloloma says she is ready to represent Fiji to the Miss World pageant and will do the country proud when she takes the stage in Mongolia.

Ms Vakaloloma will replace Torika Watters to the pageant after concerns were raised over the latter's age. The minimum age to enter the Miss World pageant is 17, however Ms Watters is 16.

In an interview with The Fiji Times, Ms Vakaloloma said she was looking forward to the challenge of being Fiji's face to the pageant.

"I believe in myself and I will be a great ambassador for Fiji," she said.

Ms Vakaloloma said she was proud to be given an opportunity to learn more about mental health issues and to champion the cause.

Ms Vakaloloma, who will leave the country in July to be part of the Miss World pageant, said she believed the obstacles faced would help keep her humble.

"This pageant is not about an individual, it's about what that person can do to represent her country, culture, her traditions and all that her country stands for."

She also made her thoughts known regarding questions of appearance.

"Being a proud Fijian woman does not only mean having a traditional buiniga, Fiji is a multiracial country and there is a lot of intermarriage, the values a person represents should mean more than her appearance."

She said it was up to individuals to educate their children on the issue of appearance.
