PRESIDENT RECEIVES OIE DIRECTOR-GENERAL

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia /MONTSAME/ The President Ts.Elbegdorj received on Thursday Dr. Bernard Vallat, the Director-General of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE).

The visit of Dr. Vallat, invited by the State Head, is aiming to consider issues of developing of a cooperation between Mongolia and the OIE.

Dr. Vallat thanked Ts.Elbegdorj for the warm audience, and noted that new opportunities to expand the collaboration have been revealed during his visit. “Mongolia is engaged in nomadic animal husbandry, has the largest number of livestock per person, which gives her a big opportunity to produce and export meat and meat products,” Dr. Vallat said, adding that Mongolia is one of the few countries who enjoy the OIE's special attention.

He said their organization launched fundamental works to declare the western region of Mongolia as a “healthy zone”. For this, some laws and resolutions on veterinary service should be altered, “besides, we are about to sent our experts to Mongolia for preparing relevant documents, and then, in May of 2013, we will run a voting on a declaration of this healthy zone,” he said.

He mentioned that the OIE and Mongolian government agreed to co-implement a project on supporting the animal husbandry sector, making livestock healthy, improving the food safety. The finances for them might be tackled with a help of the World Bank and other donors, he added.

In turn, the State Head supported Dr. Vallat's views and considered as necessary to start some works soon.
As the two sides agreed, Mongolia will invite the OIE experts to have their help in amending the laws, will take assistance in combating livestock diseases and in working out programs on making livestock healthy, will together work out livestock and animals health standards based on specific features of the Mongolian animal husbandry.
