MONGOLIA HOLDS UNOFFICIAL MEETING OF DEMOCRATIC COUNTRIES' GROUP

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia /MONTSAME/ As for the chairman of the Community Democracies (CD), Mongolia organized on May 10 an unofficial meeting of the Group of Democratic Countries at the UN.

This meeting brought together delegates of 137 participant countries of the CD and eight observers; also Mr. Roland Rich, Executive Head of the United Nations Democracy Fund (UNDEF); Mr. Philippe Kridelka, Director UNESCO Office in New York; Marc Scheuer, Director of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAoC) Secretariat Office; and Dr Massimo Tommasoli, the representative of the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance at the UN.

Then Mr. Badral reported to the Group of Democratic Countries on activities of Mongolia, on targeted works to be done before the Ministerial Meeting of the CD expected next year in Mongolia, and on reforms for the CD.

Mongolia has worked out a draft resolution on the education for democracy, based on a related international seminar to run on this May 21-22 in Ulaanbaatar. It will be submitted to the 67th session of the UN General Assembly, he said, adding that Mongolia intends to co-organize a regional conference on the education for democracy in December of 2012 together with India.

Speeches were delivered at the meeting by delegates of Australia, Benin, the Republic of Korea, Italy, Lithuania, Nigeria, Poland, Romania, Hungary, Chile, Estonia and Japan. They have introduced their measures for supporting the democracy and appreciated the activities of Mongolia and its future works.

Some countries' delegates urged the CD members to actively take part in a high-level meeting on cherishing law expected within the 67th session of the UN General Assembly.
