ENVIRONMENT MINISTERIAL MEETING OF ASEM TO RUN

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia /MONTSAME/ The 4th ASEM Environment Ministers' Meeting focused on "Sustainable Water and Forest Management" will take place on May 22-23 in Ulaanbaatar.

Water and forest are the most important resources of our globe which are dwindling in reserves even more due to climate change and unsound human activities. The availability and access to clean water is increasingly threatened by overuse, misuse and pollution, while forests have been cut and burnt at unprecedented scale. In recent years, estimates for deforestation and forest degradation were shown to account for 20-25 percent of greenhouse gas emissions.

The upcoming Meeting would provide the member-countries timely opportunity to exchange views on appropriate policies and best practices encourage and facilitate further cooperation and raise public awareness of scarcity of water and forests.

Officially established in 1996 at the first summit in Bangkok, the ASEM is an interregional forum which consists of the European Commission, the twenty-seven members of the European Union (EU), the thirteen members of the ASEAN Plus Three regional grouping, 46 partner-countries including India, Mongolia, and Pakistan, Australia, Russia and New Zealand.

The core of the ASEM action is the talks on the cooperation in socio-economic sector. As of present, the ASEM is realizing 14 initiatives at the political sector, 51 initiatives at the economic sector, and 41 initiatives at the social and cultural spheres.
