Culture fusion with American flash

A rare opportunity to learn more about Mongolian culture with a bit of American flash takes place Saturday at San Joaquin Delta College.

"Night of China: Fusion of Performing Arts from China's Inner Mongolia and Hollywood" is coming to Stockton on its tour and features several dozen dancers from China's Inner Mongolia Wulanmuqi Song and Dance Troupe along with more than a dozen performers from the Hollywood Song and Dance Troupe.

It's an evening sure to ring rare sounds for its audience.

To the unaccustomed Western ear the most startling feature of Mongolian music is its overtone singing, which results in the production of two vocal sounds at one time by the same singer.

"This is an East meets West concert," said Jun Wang, chairperson of Delta's Cultural Awareness Programs Committee. "This is an opportunity to hear Mongolian singing, which is so different from anything you might have heard because a single singer is able to make two sounds at once."

It's a unique sound rarely heard in the United States.

Throw in some costumed cowboys and you've got some real fusion fun.

Wang said the performance is an exciting event that is family friendly.

The tour is being organized by the Universal Culture Heritage Development Foundation and is being sponsored locally by the Chinese Cultural Society of Stockton, Kaiser Permanente Stockton, Pacific Complementary Medicine Center, and Delta's Asian and Pacific Islander Staff Association.

Wang said sponsorship helps keep ticket prices affordable.
