Azkals return to Panaad against Guam

MANILA, Philippines – After an absence of one year and 95 days, the Philippine Azkals will return to their long-time home, the Panaad Stadium in Bacolod, when they take on an upset-minded Guam squad on June 12.

The last time the Azkals played in Panaad was when they trounced Mongolia, 2-0, in the first leg of the AFC Challenge Cup qualifiers on February 2011.

National team captain Emelio “Chieffy” Caligdong scored an incredible goal where he famously nutmegged Mongolia keeper Tseveensuren Ganbayar.

Phil Younghusband’s scored the Azkals’ second goal late in the match, which proved to be crucial as Mongolia was able to defend their homeground at Ulan Bataar with a 2-1 victory.

The Philippines advanced on aggreggate, 3-2, ultimately culminating in an unprecedented third-place finish at the tournament ender in Nepal last month.

Guam is ranked 194th in the world but promises to be no pushover as they are now coached by Englishman Gary White, a UEFA ‘A’ Licensed Professional Coach.

White serves on the United States Soccer’s national coaching staff and played professionally in Australia’s Freemantle City and Bognor Regis.

Guam’s national side most recently competed in the South Pacific Games and the 2006 AFC Challenge Cup. The team registered its first victory over a member of FIFA on March 11, 2009, 35 years after making its debut, by beating Mongolia, 1-0, in the 2010 Easter Asian Cup Preliminary Competition.

Their second victory came on September 1, 2011, when they bat American Samoa, 2-0, in Group A at the 2011 Pacefic Games in New Caledonia.

The Guam XI has a number of players of Philippine descent.

Ticket prices for the Guam versus Philippines match will be announced in the next few days.
