River North Dance heads to Russia
River North Dance Chicago is on a major roll.
The formidable ensemble, under artistic director Frank Chaves, is heading out Thursday for an 18-city tour of Russia and its eastern coast, as well as Siberia and Mongolia .
On the bill are such repertory favorites as Chaves’ “Simply Miles, Simply Us” (to the music of Miles Davis); “At Last,” a duet to the classic Etta James recording, and “The Mourning,” Chaves’ intense, contemporary pas de deux danced to a haunting vocal performance of a Russian folk song performed by Bielka Nemirovski.
Once back home, the company will head to the stage of the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park for a free, full-length performance at 6:30 p.m. June 5. On the bill will be Chaves’ “Habaneras, The Music of Cuba”; “At Last”; a revival of Kevin Iega Jeff’s 2006 work, “Sky,” and “Ella,” choreographed by Robert Battle, now artistic director of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Also that evening, Mayor Rahm Emanuel will be presented with River North’s Dream Maker Award for his “dedication to promoting dance throughout the city of Chicago.”

PARIS OPERA BALLET TO BE SIMULCAST IN PARK
In partnership with the City of Chicago and Millennium Park, the Harris Theater for Music and Dance will present a free, outdoor simulcast of “Giselle” as performed by the Paris Opera Ballet. This simulcast, the first of its kind, will take place at 7:30 p.m. June 27 and will be broadcast on a state-of-the-art, 18-foot by 32-foot LED screen located in the Pritzker Pavilion. The simulcast is part of the Paris Opera Ballet’s June 26-July 1 engagement at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance.
