OYUTOLGOI LLC TO FIGHT AGAINST INFECTIOUS DISEASES

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia /MONTSAME/ The Oyutolgoi LLC announced on Thursday it has introduced its latest social project designed to improve the living standards of local residents and support new health services.

With its newest initiative, the Oyutolgoi is working alongside international developmental NGO Pact, the National Center Against Infectious Diseases, the Mongolian Red Cross Society and the Social Health Institute to launch a “STD, TB, HIV/AIDS prevention project” around the mine operations area. The programme began on March 1, 2012 and will last for a year.

Head of the TB Diagnosis Department at the National Center Against Infectious Diseases O.Batbayar said:“We are very happy that Oyu Tolgoi is fulfilling its social responsibility and launching and financing this project. I believe other mining companies operating in Mongolia should follow this example and conduct health risk assessments for local residents living in mining impact areas”.

Oyu Tolgoi is committed to raising awareness of the risks of TB, HIV/AIDS and STDs and promoting safe practices to prevent the spread of these infectious diseases. Oyu Tolgoi is keen that as inward migration to Khanbogd, Dalanzadgad, Bayan-Ovoo, and Manlai increases, any adverse impacts are mitigated and minimized.

Project leader B.Odontsetseg PhD said:“This project is aimed at reducing the risks of TB, STD and HIV/AIDS infection, and building local capacity by taking comprehensive measures that are carefully aligned with national strategy. These programmes are designed to work alongside existing Mongolian monitoring programs and to meet specific local needs.”
