Barrier set up to battle cross-border grassland fires

HOHHOT, April 23 (Xinhua) -- A fire barrier has been set up along the north China border to prevent grassland fires from further crossing into China from Mongolia.

Firefighters in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region finished building a 195-km-long barrier through the use of controlled burns in Xing'an league (county) as of 7 a.m. Monday, according to sources from the regional firefighting headquarters.

Nearly 1,600 firefighters have been deployed in several areas along the border to battle fires that spread across the border last Friday.

Strong winds are hampering firefighting efforts, the headquarters said.
