Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia /MONTSAME/ Marking the twentieth anniversary of Peace Corps in Mongolia, the latest group of 66 new Peace Corps Volunteers was sworn in on Friday, August 26 in Darkhan, website of the US Embassy in Mongolia has reported. They will soon take up their two-year assignments across Mongolia. There are now 135 Peace Corps Volunteers in Mongolia--the largest number to serve at one time.

This year's 11-week Peace Corps training program, which took place mostly in and around Darkhan, consisted of classroom training, 190 hours of Mongolian language study, technical training for other sectors, and " home stays" with local families. The 66 new Peace Corps volunteers will work with Mongolian counterparts in four main areas: English teaching, youth development, economic development, and health education. The largest number of the volunteers - about two-thirds - will focus on teaching English.

Proportionately, the Peace Corps contingent in Mongolia is among the largest in the world, and since 1991, more than 800 Volunteers have served with the Peace Corps in Mongolia. "This year marks not only the 20th anniversary of Peace Corps in Mongolia; it also marks the 50th anniversary of Peace Corps world-wide," country director Ellen Paquette said. Historically, more than 200,000 Americans have served as Volunteers in 139 different countries since the Peace Corps was founded in 1961.
